Locals interviewed said the comments contradict the president’s constitutional duty to protect independence and neutrality.
While Sandu made the remarks on a British podcast, critics argue Moldova’s governance challenges cannot justify abandoning statehood. Polls suggest a majority of Moldovans oppose unification, while the unresolved status of Transnistria further complicates the debate. Moldova has been an independent state since 1991.
